Reading load in college is uneven. Some weeks it is fifty pages, some weeks it is three hundred, and it rarely lines up with when you actually have free hours to sit and read. Listening does not fix the reading load, but it changes where you can do the reading, which for a lot of students is the actual bottleneck.

The shape of student reading

Course reading tends to be PDFs (scanned or exported), journal articles with citations, textbook chapters, and the occasional long-form article a professor links to. That mix is different from, say, novels or newsletters, and it affects what actually matters in a listening tool:

  • PDFs need to extract cleanly, including ones exported from a learning management system or scanned by a library.
  • Citations and reference numbers should not interrupt the sentence you are trying to follow.
  • You need to stop and resume constantly, between classes, during a commute, mid-chapter when you get pulled into something else, and pick up exactly where you left off.
  • Cost matters, and it should track how much you actually use it, not lock you into a flat rate that assumes daily use during exam weeks and finals-week silence otherwise.

How PDFs and citations are handled

ReadLoud extracts a PDF's text layer, which covers the overwhelming majority of course PDFs, whether they came from a publisher, a professor's slide export, or a library scan with an underlying text layer. Headers, footers, page numbers, and citation brackets, the [12] or (Smith, 2019) style markers scattered through academic writing, are dropped during extraction so a sentence reads as a sentence instead of stopping every few words for a reference number. Anything skipped is shown dimmed directly on the page, so you can always check back and see exactly what was left out rather than wondering if something silently vanished.

One real limitation worth knowing upfront: a scanned PDF that is actually just a photographed image, with no text layer underneath, will not extract, because there is no text to read, only pixels. That covers some older library scans. If a PDF looks like an image of a page rather than selectable text, it will not work here.

DOCX files (problem sets, papers, lecture notes) and plain text also upload directly, and links to open-access readings extract like a reader view, dropping site navigation and ads.

Reading lists and switching between sources

A typical week might mix a textbook PDF, two journal articles, and a linked news piece for a discussion section. That matters more than it sounds: switching from your phone on the walk to campus to your laptop in the library and picking up exactly where you left off removes one more reason to fall behind.

Speed runs 0.5x to 4x with pitch preserved. A lot of students settle around 1.5x to 2x for supplementary reading they want the gist of, and closer to 1x or slightly under for something they need to actually retain for an exam. On iPhone, Safari caps audio at 2x, an Apple platform limit rather than anything specific to one app, worth knowing if you are speed-listening on your phone between classes.

Highlighting and focus mode for actual studying

Listening alone works for a first pass through a reading, but for material you need to retain for an exam or a discussion section, ReadLoud's word-by-word highlighting gives you something closer to studying than passive listening. The highlighting is measured from the real generated audio through forced alignment, so the highlighted word matches what is actually being spoken, with a sentence-level tint as a wider anchor. None of this requires a special setup per document. Fonts (serif, sans, mono, or OpenDyslexic), text size, spacing, and four themes (light, sepia, dark, black) apply the same way across every reading, so once you find a setup that works for late-night reading in a dark dorm room versus a bright library table, it carries over automatically.

Keyboard shortcuts for switching between reading and other work

Since a lot of student reading happens in short bursts between other tasks, keyboard shortcuts help: Space or K to play and pause, arrow keys to skip and adjust speed, Shift plus arrows to move by sentence, F for focus mode, S for settings, and V for voice. None of this requires memorizing a manual, but knowing you can pause instantly with the space bar when someone walks into the library carrel next to you is a small, real convenience.

What a semester actually costs

There is no subscription. Credits are minutes of freshly generated audio at 1x speed in any voice, and listening faster does not cost more, 2x speed costs the same as 1x because the price is based on generated audio, not playback time. Replays of anything already generated are free. As a rough guide, 1,500 words works out to about 10 minutes of audio.

Packs run Taste (60 minutes, $9, $0.15 a minute), Regular (300 minutes, $36, $0.12 a minute), and Binge (1,000 minutes, $99, $0.099 a minute), and minutes never expire, so a pack bought in September is still good in December. For a student doing supplementary listening rather than converting every single reading, one midsize pack often covers a semester. If your reading volume is heavier, a subscription elsewhere may work out cheaper. As a rule of thumb, once you are consistently over about 10 hours a month, a flat subscription starts to beat a per-minute pack, and it is worth doing that math honestly against your own reading habits rather than guessing.
